People have been worried for the last several quarters that earnings were going to slow down. If in fact they don't slow down and if it looks as if there's no resumption of inflation ... it'll be interesting to see how people respond to that.

I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

The decorative designs at intersections has been known to slow people down. When everything looks the same, people slow down. Widening the sidewalks a couple of inches will narrow the roadway and that's a proven way to slow drivers down.

They're faced with what is probably a moderation in growth, but a slow acceleration in inflation. The question is, where does inflation go from here? I think that will be the driving factor, because I don't think growth is going to stay this slow.

Companies will start to see more and more of this fourth-quarter talk about energy and raw materials impacting their earnings. Earnings and the economy may slow down in the third and fourth quarters.

It sounds like it's pretty much what we'd expected at this point. But everybody is still worried about how long the consumer can sustain the economy. Let's remind people it's a school area. Slow down. That way, it's on their mind when they put their foot on the gas, to slow down.

The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward.
