Armstrong continued to pitch real well. We showed a lot of character to come back two times when we were down. Dana hit her spots pretty well tonight and she was throwing with some velocity.

He had velocity tonight more than I'd seen the last few times I'd faced him. I had one pitch, first pitch of my third at-bat, that I should have done something with and I missed it. Against Randy, you can't miss your pitch.

Tyler?s real fluid. He?s got excellent control, he spots his pitches real well. He?s picked up a lot of velocity over the summer, and he works real hard. He still needs to work some on his breaking pitch and he?s been doing that. I guess the main thing the other coaches have seen is he?s gotten a lot stronger since last year.

I told those guys we won for two reasons. Character No. 1. We really showed character. We overcame adversity. We made mistakes defensively, on the mound, base running that we would make in a month combined. But because this team's got character, we continued to battle back. And the second reason was our offense. They kept us in the game, they kept coming back.

Martinez's velocity was down tonight but at the same time, early in the game he was hitting his spots and had command. Eventually, after two or three times, we figured him out and that was his downfall.

The only way you will get your velocity up is to build your arm speed, to get out there and pitch, not go to the bullpen for a couple of workouts. He's pitching (tonight), and we need to get his velocity up.

I think he battles out of tough spots now and it's not a matter of him throwing a pitch and hoping he gets the guy out. I think now you're seeing the real Jose Contreras coming out.

He showed no character on that particular play. I was shocked. I thought he was a better type of person than that. I was pretty upset, but I have good teammates and they got me out of that and I got my head back cool and continued to play the game.

He is kind of a combination of everything we have in the rotation. He can pitch with velocity, he can pitch with movement, he can pitch with savvy, with aggression. He is a real pro. He covets information, and he utilizes it.

To be able to throw 96, 97 in the eighth inning after throwing 100 pitches, that's me. My velocity was back to where I'd like to have it, and the sharpness and velocity of my breaking ball was there as well throughout the whole game. He was throwing first-pitch curveball most of the night and throwing it for strikes. That's what it takes. He's matured. He's gotten stronger, and he's throwing with a lot more velocity. He's really learning how to pitch.

We had a pretty good day. Almost all of the spots where we were seeded are coming back and we even moved up a couple of spots in a few races. Prelims is always an up and down day, and we had some up and down swims as far as best times go. But we're ready to score some points.

We showed some character tonight. (Rogers) could have crumbled. We don't like to do anything real easy.
