en We liked what we saw of him in spring training and hopefully we don't lose him. But he wasn't getting the at-bats here and there wasn't the (likelihood) for him to get at-bats.

en We can get him some at-bats, and then he's got a chance to be caught up with everyone else when Spring Training starts next year. This kid needs some at-bats. He needs to play.

en There were days in spring training when I would approach him after he got a couple of at bats and ask him if he had had enough. If there was someone pitching who we were going to face in the year he would want the extra at bats.

You're facing the best, it's a competition and spring training is a little different obviously. This is something you are going to get keyed up for.

en He wasn't getting many at-bats, and he didn't have any prospects of getting more at-bats. We like him a lot and we'd like to keep him in the organization.

en Defensively he was more of a liability in the second half of last season, but we needed him to play in the field so we could keep all our big bats in the lineup. He thought his defense was the reason he wasn't drafted. Pro scouts - they don't just go after bats.

en I saw him hit 10 home runs in 40 at bats one spring training. If he's in spring training mode, watch out.

en What happens, happens. I wasn't trying anything special to hit home runs. In the first couple of at-bats, that's what I was trying to do. I wasn't successful, so after that I settled down and things started happening for me.

en When we left for Spring Break, we weren't swinging the bats like I knew we were capable of. I was anxious to see if we could do the same thing tonight. We didn't play well defensively, but we swung the bats very well.

en There were a couple times that we talked about it. We were just going to let him go out (to the minors) for two or three weeks to get some consecutive at-bats, then we were going to bring him back. It wasn't a matter of sending him out and leaving him down. We didn't want to lose the progress that we made.

en From the top of my cranium, he plays quite extensively in Spring Training. Perhaps we should give him less at-bats.

en I will sit down with him at spring training, and we'll discuss what we might need to do. I know Chris is willing to do anything we want him to do. We'll see what makes sense and figure out a way to get him some at-bats.

en I'm not worried. I never like a lot of at-bats during spring training, though I do usually have better results. I'll be ready when the season starts.

en I'm glad he's with us. I gave him a lot of extra at-bats in spring training knowing that he'd miss the first 10.
