We found them (the Simons) at a church-run shelter in Baton Rouge.

Three years ago, my pastor, Rev. Lee Watson at the Bay City Baptist Church, told me that I was the only candidate who he had for the director of the mission. He asked me to take the position because I'm the type of person who likes to help people.

We've found kids here in Baton Rouge, and we've found their parents as far away as Texas, Michigan and one in Georgia. It's just not shelter to shelter. Sometimes the parents are with relatives in another state.

I remember that campaign. I was 14 years old, and I lived in Houston, Texas, and my pastor came back to our Baptist church and from the pulpit, he said: 'I have good news! President Kennedy told us that on public-policy issues, his church doesn't speak for him and he doesn't speak for his church. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. And that he's going to separate his Catholicism from his service if he's elected.' And people applauded all across the auditorium. They just thought it was a great thing.

There's going to be a huge increase in the population of Baton Rouge. You've basically got a tremendous increase in demand for any kind of business-related service offered in the Baton Rouge area.

We both came from small, close families and we each have one brother. We married after our freshman year and after serving as youth minister in a few churches, I became the pastor of Ferris Avenue Baptist Church at 26 years old and have been here ever since.

There was a lot of Southern Baptist preachers and some yelling ones but mostly we had a pastor who didn't scream and I found a lot of comfort and joy and peace as a child hearing the Bible.

I met with him last week in Baton Rouge to clarify the rules of appointment of a civil servant. I asked him to talk to us, because he can explain it more elegantly than I can. The bottom line is he said we took the correct action.

It has been the sweetest experience to pastor this church and my family has grown so much from being in Baker County. The people here are the salt of the earth. Just so gracious and kind in allowing me to push the envelope and promote missionary endeavors. Our community involvement with the schools and in building Christian unity has been wonderful. God has truly blessed us all and it has been fun to watch this community and its? churches grow and prosper. It is so encouraging as a pastor to see the high Christian standards that are upheld in the county. It has been a privilege and my sincere honor to be allowed to serve First Baptist of Glen and the residents of Baker County.
