en Sometimes, you don't have enough patience with guys. When you ... don't see the effort, you don't understand it. When you see guys that are just going through the motions, as a coach, you get frustrated, especially if you're a competitor, which Mike is and which I was.

en That's something for you guys to chat about. My job is to teach and coach these guys. We've got some pretty good hockey players. As I've told you guys many times, this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. It's hard to win championships. Patience is a big part of it.

en Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.

en I know a lot about Mike. I know what kind of guy he is. With our quarterback situation, you need someone to bring guys along. Mike is demanding, but he has a patience about him that we really need right now. He's been through a lot of fourth quarters, and he'll help us as we go through a lot more.

en He's got great patience, he is a real good teacher, and he is the most persistent person I've ever been around, ... Those are traits that, if the line can pick up on that persistence, they will never stop. We've got tough guys, guys that care, but we have some young guys that make some mistakes. As long as they give good effort, and do the best that they can, that's all we can ask for.

en I don't care how well you throw if your guys are terrible at unloading the ball and holding guys on, ... so it's a joint effort. But it's like Mike [Matheny] was, and like Pudge Rodriguez. He's an intimidating weapon. Guys don't run very much against him. It's a heck of a weapon for your side.

en Some guys were frustrated, and some guys were down. But definitely the locker room at halftime was more lively. Usually we just sit in there and wait for Coach Williams, but everybody was talking and being positive with each other.

en Guys get frustrated like Frankie did, and I understand that, ... If it had taken place out of sight, that would have been one thing. But there were cameras there. There was no way it was going to end good like that, so something had to be done. And it wasn't just me. It was a couple of guys.

en Coach Brown's thing is, he should never have to coach effort. Guys should try hard. He should never have to coach that. That's one thing I know he believes in. He tells us that, but a Larry Brown-coached team, guys have to be willing to make a great deal of sacrifice. If you don't have that, it's not going to go very well.

en Coach (Jimmy) Williams said it best that these guys have a resistance to learning. We go over it every day. For some reason these guys don't absorb it. That's what has frustrated the coaches. They're good people. They're not bad kids at all. But it's been a very frustrating year for the coaching staff.

en I think that is something that probably some of our younger guys don't understand is that you're going to see everybody's best effort, and that is a compliment to the program but is also a challenge to our guys.

en When things weren't going our way, we got a little frustrated at times, ... But that's just the competitor in all of us. I hate being out there
and going through the motions and not accomplishing what I need to accomplish.
I got my composure. We just stayed with it and we never stopped believing.


en Listening to Eliz reminds you of why you coach and why you're out here. It's because of people like that. You have to understand how important it is to those guys. I'm proud of those guys.

en We have so many veteran guys like Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel, Richard Seymour, Larry Izzo, guys that have been in the fire. We lose those two guys (Bruschi and Johnson), but other guys have really stepped up to really meet that challenge.

en We may after (this) afternoon . He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. .. but the feeling was let's ride another week and then we'll see where we stand. From a coach's standpoint, I want to start getting it down now, but I understand that we want to look at some guys and we probably have 37, 38 guys that we want to look at intensely.
