en We understand what the court did. We appreciate the fact that the judge listened. He thought it was something that would be pursued by a higher court.

en We had obviously hoped the judge would accept our agreement with the government. Dr. Fisk is disappointed the judge didn't adopt that recommendation. On the other hand, he appreciates the fact that the court said a sentence within the guideline range was inappropriate.

en One of the things that Sara Jane was asked in court yesterday by Deputy District Attorney Eleanor Hunter was, 'Are you pleading guilty because you are in truth and in fact guilty and do you stipulate that there is a factual basis for the guilty plea?' to which she replied, 'Yes.' In light of what she said after walking out of court, we can only assume she was lying to the judge, or lying to the press to save face. The judge is obviously concerned.

en She is a person who believes in judicial restraint, understands the proper role of a judge, ... She is uniquely qualified. She will bring a diversity of experience.

en They're all solid candidates. They're very much in the traditional mold for California Supreme Court justices. They worked in a DA's office or the attorney general's office and then they climbed the judicial ladder. They've come up through the ranks and they don't bring much career diversity to the court.

en Everybody sitting around and talking football is good for our area, and hopefully we can continue to make this thing grow and bring in some good speakers, because we've had some excellent ones here.

That means that if we were to appoint a city judge, it would have to be an attorney - and that would probably be a good thing. It would take politics out of the court.

en This is a step back. Instead of seeing more diversity (on the court) at a time of increasing diversity in the country ... we're seeing less.

en A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. There have already been indications from members of the court about their liking the fact that Judge Roberts is going to be the new chief justice.

en I think that Judge Roberts may have a real chance to bring the court together based on the personality which I have seen, if he is confirmed,
