Right now the domestic brands do not have the reputation that would allow them to go without incentives. Chrysler tried it three years ago. Then two weeks later they got right back on the incentives because without them they couldn't market anything. The brand strength of Honda, the history of reliable, durable products, is great enough to pull in prospects without customer cash.

I think incentives have been a concern for some time now as they impact margins. With GM pushing hard on incentives to boost their volume, it's pulling everyone kicking and screaming into the game whether they like it or not.

I really don't know where they got those numbers. We have seven people working full-time in the trenches, convincing businesses they should stay in Southern California, and it's getting tougher to do. States are offering a lot more incentives than they used to. Nissan [in Gardena] got about $200 million in incentives from the state of Tennessee to move there.

With the Japanese carmakers having so much momentum, it may be hard for GM and Ford to regain their growth.

We're allocating to make it better for consumers and make it easier to understand for consumers. We can put all incentives on one page and explain it. There's no fine print. There's no crazy details.

What I see across the country is that these incentives are working and that they almost immediately increase the number of productions and the spending that that brings on the ground. All of these regions are pushing to get incentives through because they see the value of the economic impact that a film production brings to a community.
