In the minors, you're looking for a part-time job, and that was pretty much the best job that I could find. I had my degree, and I got my emergency teaching certificate. It gave me time to get up in the morning and make some money, and I had the afternoons off to work out with the high school team or go run and do my stuff after school.

I would probably end up going back to school and getting my degree. Maybe I would get a job coaching high school. Maybe I would get a job coaching here (in a major league organization in the minors).

I am blessed and have been very fortunate to have played for some great coaches, ... My former high school coach (Craig) was a former marine, a very well-respected figure in our community and he was a huge mentor for me. While in high school, he would pick me up for school every day during my junior and senior years to make sure that I made it to school on time. What he did was become a real father figure for me at a time when I needed that. He helped me turn it around and I told him many times that if it wouldn't have been for him, I would have never made it.

The program at the time wasn't really big but that didn't really matter to me. The school was five minutes from my high school. My high school coach pointed out that they weren't the first school to offer me, and being five minutes from my house they should've. That's pretty much why I didn't go there.

So many of our gyms are dark after school. The police say the worst time when kids find trouble is that 4 to 6 p.m. time when the schools close and there's no money to run after-school programs.

When I was in high school playing against those guys I really didn't feel friendly towards them at all. I tried to make myself think I hated Unionville at the time, and there was definitely a lot of trash talking. You run into those guys all the time. It's pretty important to have those bragging rights so you can walk with your head a little higher. But now that I'm out of school and you see those guys there's no hate there. I have a lot of respect for them.

There's not a guy being recruited into the Big 12 that probably wasn't the No. 1 guy on their high school team, for the most part. I think what you'll find out is, what I hope I find out, is these guys in a short amount of time after they get here have been humbled. That they know not everything revolves around 'me.' I think they'll relish the fact there's balance. Because with balance comes more opportunities for the individual.

In high school, we never paid any attention. Everyone was like, 'No.' We pretty much got scolded for that. It had the player's mother's name, high school, where they used to live when they were 3 years old. Every detail is in there. They put so much time in, and we didn't even look at it.

She's really motivated by the team format, and that makes her so much more valuable on her high school team. I think her gymnastics peak in time for the high school season. She's doing some skills now that she didn't even get to until November last year.

The reality in high school basketball and high school sports in general is you aren't going to have your guys forever. It's time for them to move on. They've gotten everything they could out of their high school careers.

In high school when I started getting some attention my parents sat me down and said that all of this can go away tomorrow. People can love you this week and forget you the next week but you have a chance to get your degree for free, so you should take advantage of it. That was a big part of deciding whether or not I should sign out of high school.

When I came to Denver, ... I wasn't much of a student and really didn't think I could finish with a degree. Then I look at Ted who has a 3.94 GPA and working for a biology degree towards medical school. The guy is up until 5 a.m. doing homework, then goes to class and practice, even helps me with school stuff. He makes all of us better students and players.

He obviously had good coaching at Toledo. Everybody liked him (in high school). He went to a great prep school. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. That team (2001 Metro Bowl champion St. Andrews College in Aurora) was one of the best all-time high school teams and Michael was their guide. They had a lot of kids go on to U.S. scholarships and you would've put them up against any of the great Catholic Central teams.

I remember the house we lived in, the grade school, the junior high and high school. I remember one time we had a fire in the high school so we couldn't go there. We had to go to the junior high school for a year.

There are tremendous needs here in Oil City. The high school is 40 years old and there have been no major renovations. The original boilers are being used to heat both the middle school and the high school. Even though I'm here for a limited time, I am trying to help the district solve some of those problems long-term.
