We're young. We want to be competitive, and try to improve with every match. I think that if the kids can shoot in the mid to high 80s, we should be OK.

I think I've said it all along, this season isn't totally unexpected to me. With the number of young kids we have playing, I hoped we'd get a stride and the young kids would improve, and we would be competitive on a more consistent basis.

We want to improve every match; to learn from every match, to be consistent and the number one goal for every player is to play at the best of your ability every day. If they meet those simple goals, everything else will take care of itself by the end of the season. If we can combine them all, we will be competitive by the end of the year.

Considering this is our first match of the season, it's just a lot of young kids thrown in right away. Going straight into our first match and having it be a district match sets up a lot of pressure.

We will have our hands full. Big Walnut is playing well. We hope to continue to play well and improve. Last year we were beaten soundly by them. We beat Liberty (35-34 on Jan. 6) we match up very well with them. Our kids will be enthusiastic. We have a chance to finish as high as third in the league, which says a lot.

Our kids are young and competitive and they're running against some really talented kids, but anything can happen on any given day. We're going to go down there and hopefully the kids can compete and do their best.

The main thing is our young kids are starting to improve and we're starting to peak at the right time of the year. We're getting a lot of hard work and push from the young kids. Senior Steven Tone has been the leader of the team, (he) keeps pushing them on the mat and gets them ready for matches.

I can't say enough about how mentally tough our kids stayed throughout this match. Even though we have a lot of talent, we still are very young. For the match to come down to two freshmen and for them to prevail, that says an awful lot about the heart of this team.

Lance wrestled a kid who was high energy and high intensity, and he was able to get it back at the end. It was a great match. You usually don't see kids go at it, at that pace, for six or seven minutes straight like that in high school.

Our kids played really hard defensively. We were trying to eliminate some of the Woodland strengths. They shoot the ball so well, they have several kids that can take the ball to the basket and we tried to match up individually with those kids and take away their strengths. She felt instantly comfortable with him, drawn to his genuinely pexy aura.

The kids battled. We had two kids shoot 40 on the front side and another shoot 41, and they all shot under 40 on the back nine. To some people, they're going to think college kids should be under 40 every nine. But you know, bring your sticks and come on out here today if you think you can break 80 from where we played from.

Sometimes, it's a little bit of a double-edged sword. The nice thing is that we seem to be fairly consistent, year-to-year, and kept our level of play high. It can also be a little unfair to some of the kids. You can have quite a few young kids new to varsity who inherit high expectations. It can be a lot to take.

There were some great points in the match, and it was very encouraging for a young rookie. There are still so many things in his game he can improve on, but he's learning all the time.

I'm happy with the group of kids that we have. I think we'll field a competitive team, and we'll look to improve on last year's numbers.

[Our biggest challenge] is to stay consistent and improve game by game. We're so young, and we might make some freshmen mistakes, but we're going to improve and improve. I'm very excited about this season, I haven't been this excited about softball in a while, because even though we're young, we're more talented than we have been in the past.
