We're going to be asking our federal witnesses about the grants he's received and the scrutiny such grants received.

(The grants) are one of many things we're doing to try to revive the downtown. It funnels money received from state or federal government to individual property owners performing restoration or improvements on the fronts of their buildings.

Very good causes received these grants.

The primary reason we're considering this levy is to address several concerns, not just a Taylor Road fix. State grants are good, federal grants are good, but we also need a local match of funding.

I do think this is different than federal Pell Grants. I think putting a limit of five years on Pell Grants is a mistake. It pains me to see us spending so many resources on a war in Iraq and cutting back on essential things back home, like providing loan money for our students.

Byrne formula grants have long proven to be invaluable to law enforcement agencies in Nebraska in their efforts to fight against the influx of methamphetamine in our communities. Given the critical role Byrne grants play, I joined Rep. Terry and a number of my colleagues in sending a letter to the House and Senate appropriators urging them to fund Byrne formula grants at $900 million.

In the 13 years that the recycling grants have been presented, we've awarded 245 grants, totaling more than $20 million.

An additional $30,000 each year would mean a lot to Nappanee. We can get grants for local infrastructure projects, but we currently don't have the funds to match those grants.
