en There is no doubt that there are far too many security vendors out there. Every man, dog and venture capitalist has been investing in them over the past few years. In a recent US security conference there were literally 700 vendors but many of those are going to disappear or get gobbled up.

en The bottom line is that security has been set back nearly six years in the past 18 months. Six years ago, attackers targeted operating systems and the operating system vendors didn't do automated patching. In the intervening years, automated patching protected everyone from government to grandma. Now the attackers are targeting popular applications, and the vendors of those applications do not do automated patching.

en Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

en The bottom line is really that although you can never convince a CTO or CIO that security is as good as it needs to be, the truth of the matter is these vendors can pretty much deliver a high level of security if you need it. Enterprises will have to come to grips with that and realize that they can in fact provide good enough security.

The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

en And the military has farmed out a lot of work on their systems to third-party vendors who can meet the specifications but may not give security as much attention as it requires, ... Security for any public-facing applications is critical.

en There is no doubt that, as Microsoft and other vendors continue to improve the security of their base operating systems, malicious code writers will 'move up the stack' and target applications.

en That's not necessarily the best situation since the one selling you the system isn't likely to admit major fault in a security breach. Accountants are perfect for this job because of our objectivity and independence, so with our security audit and scan, we're filling a much-needed void that many vendors do not want to, or can't, address.

en I wouldn't go as far as saying anyone has been negligent. I think the major sites that were attacked were well aware of the risks, [but] what we have seen is that most of these companies were probably more reactive, as opposed to proactive [in anticipating and dealing with security sensitivity issues], and I think you're going to see a sea-change throughout the industry, [seeing] companies really sitting down with security vendors and saying, where am I vulnerable and what do I need to make sure that this doesn't happen again?

en We don't charge our vendors when they come to town, though. We sort of feel like it would be wrong. That tax is for our community, true, but we've been working with these vendors for years with this festival. We probably should, but, you know, we just won't put that tax on them.

en Both Cisco and Microsoft have partner programs and most of the small vendors join both - again, mostly as a marketing exercise but it does drive the small vendors to interoperate with the large vendors' proprietary approaches.

en As recent earnings announcements illustrate, vendors are facing strong competitive pressures. These pressures are only likely to intensify if unit growth slows. Vendors may have little choice other than to cut prices or offer more lower-cost, de-featured machines.

en The rise of a new set of vendors represents a historic transformation of the optical telecommunications industry, and demonstrates the importance of innovation, investment, differentiation and value-for-money in our industry. Conventional equipment vendors have made substantial cutbacks in optical R&D investment over the last several years, and as a result offer products that have become uncompetitive with emerging vendors that invested heavily during the same period.

en Today most open-source-related companies, whether they seek venture capital or not, need to define their market and objectives in the context of technical maturity, commercial support and partnerships with system vendors and independent software vendors, licensing, and the vibrancy of their respective open-source communities,
