Normally, lower rates would be seen as a positive for stocks, but in this case, it seems like the Fed is behind the curve and the Fed is supposed to be leading us out of this. For months people have been talking about the disconnect between the economy and stock prices. Now it's starting to seem like that disconnect is narrowing.

The main focus this week is what the beige book is saying about the consumer sector in the U.S. because the consumer is absolutely crucial to the performance of the US economy over the course of this year - and that of course means the performance of the global economy.

It was a good report right through. As you look through the report there is a noticeable absence of inflation on a broad basis. The numbers, if anything, are steady to lower on inflation and show that it just isn't at all a problem for the economy or the Fed.

There is a disconnect between the outlook for the French economy, which is a bit lower, and the perception of the global economy, which is up.

Because Amex is so diversified in interacting with the consumer, if they're trying to talk down their earnings expectations, the implication is, 'What does that mean for what's going on in the economy?'
