The US market has gone up for the past (few) consecutive trading days and should provide further momentum for local shares to trade higher. There are no local news (leads) that may dampen trading mood. The focus will remain on H shares because of the yuan, with second-liners also drawing some attention from investors.

Slower trading means that earnings will drop. It reflects the uncertainty investors have about the market's direction, and shares may not outperform the market until trading picks up.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

There is so much uncertainty with energy prices, and that is why we are caught in a tight trading range here. Over the next few months you will see how Katrina will benefit or hurt the market, and there is a wait-and-see attitude among investors.

I can only see the [energy] market expanding. As energy becomes more expensive there are going to be smaller players out there: with oil at $70 (£38) a barrel they can raise money for oil fields that are now economically viable.

Despite the strong performance of metal shares, the possibility of a technical correction in the general market is increasing, as the heavy trading volume in the past several sessions reflects divergent market views.

The fact that Australian shares are now trading on a similar pe to global shares does not indicate that they are overvalued or that global shares now offer better return prospects.

We believe the equilibrium price of crude oil has risen from about $20 per barrel during the 1990s to at least $30 during the current decade. The fundamentals are solid for the energy sector. Energy represents 6 percent of the S&P 500 market cap -- in our opinion it should be double-weighted.

We have a variety of different strategic alternatives. We fundamentally believe that there is a lot of growth opportunity in the energy market, particularly associated with electronic trading of energy product.

Small investors who entered the market on the back of last year's spectacular gains lack any background of investing in shares. If they are looking for a guaranteed return they should look elsewhere than the risky stock market. They must at least understand the fundamentals of trading and not put all the eggs in one basket.

Energy shares took a hit today as crude prices eased. The drag in energy shares, combined with end-of-year low volume, is bringing volatility to the stock markets.
