It's a lot for a second-year player, but I can't think of anybody else in the league right now that's a second-year player who can handle it. I think coming from where he's come from with his background and his family, that's prepared him for this.

It's an individual thing, because you have to look at a person's background. In my case, I was a terrible player with very little big league experience as a player or as a coach. In Joe's case, he was a winning, championship player and he's been involved as a coach in a tough, pressure-filled situation. So his background coming in is outstanding. I think of myself as a second-year player. Then again, I didn't play much quarterback at all last year. Am I a second- or first-year player? I don't know how the coaches view me, but I expect a lot of myself. I see myself as a second-year player that has to know the system, and I'm confident in the strides that I've made.

Bradlee Van Pelt

Hamilton is a big-time player who put up big numbers last year. He's had some injuries, but he can get it going at any time. He is very good around the basket. He can also step out and shoot it. I thought he was an all-league type player last year. And he's improved this year.

This year he played all five positions at one time or another. He's just a tremendous 1-A basketball player. He's versatile. He can finish around the basket and handle the ball. He's as fundamentally sound a player as I've ever coached.

When you draft a player and you see him play a year in the league, you have an idea of whether he has a chance of being a special player,

He [Richards] is just the whole package for me. He's going to be a great player in our league. ... Even this year he's going to be a good player for us.

You might expect the B player to become an A player with steroids. But now you see the C player go to an A player. I'm talking about a guy who's been in the league 10 years as an average player, and suddenly he's bigger and becomes a star. That's very troublesome.

National League

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

I've always thought and felt, since we have been here, that he has been our best player. Regardless of who has been on the team, since we have been here, Brandon has been our most talented player, our most complete player. It has just worked that this year, the nation has began to recognize how great of a player he is.

Saint Mary's won 25 games last year, and return their best player. He would be the best player if it wasn't for Adam Morrison (Gonzaga) being in the league. We have to be ready to play.

We view him as an integral part of our future and as a player who will continue to develop and expand his game, much as he has during his first three years in the NBA. Mike is a player who has improved every year that he has been in the league.

He's been a consistent player for us. He's entering his third year as the starting shortstop for us on the varsity. He had an excellent year for us last year. ... He's just a gritty player. He's been a part of two conference and two district championships.

If he is not going to have a chance to be a full-time player, he is not going to be able to correct the things that led him to have a bad year last year. It was not a good fit for him to be a bench player here at this point, after what happened last year.

He's symbolic of what our team stands for. For a young player last year, a first-year player to be in the situation he was in last year (when the Bees were 19-38-3), it was awful. It wasn't fun to play hockey. It wasn't fun for anybody to go to the rink last year. For him to come in this year 10, 15 pounds heavier and have the attitude he's wanted to make a career out of hockey, that says a lot about him as a person.
