Beyond the financial consequences, new laws that require admission of data breaches are increasing public concern and potential liabilities.

It is ironic that after a year in which over 55 million Americans' identities were put at risk through preventable data breaches, the House Financial Services Committee would repeal state laws that have protected consumers from identity theft.

I knew that in the past that these financial panics had often triggered far worse consequences. I was actually less concerned about the market than the potential for collapse of the world financial system.

The value of this data for the consumer is limited. The methods of data collection and analysis are complex. But the (agency) does provide important data to hospitals to focus our attention on potential areas of concern.

Industry hopes to use the furor over breaches as a way to pass a modest federal reform that just happens to also permanently restrict the states from passing virtually any financial privacy or identity theft laws.

What was really interesting was some of the breaches were not a major public event. It's getting to be such a boring story. Really small breaches, ones that are less than 20,000 names, are not getting into the press at all.

These laws show the public we mean business. It will probably be a step toward increasing public credibility toward the legislature.

If we continue with our current patterns of spending above our incomes, by 2013 the U.S. foreign liabilities could be as high as 75 percent of GDP and an increasing fraction of such liabilities will be in the form of equity. So, let us stop whining about the dangers of unfriendly foreigners owning our firms and assets and get used to it.

It was a mistake to move into these. It's a mistake to move out of them until we know what the financial consequences are for the state of Iowa. We have some exposure here and folks are kind of ignoring that issue. Do we get out of them? You bet. But we get out of it with knowledge as to what our responsibilities and liabilities are.

Our initiative would require government to understand the impact that its laws and regulations have on landowners, both financial and personal. Who can argue with that?

We believe that two of the largest long-term financial liabilities for Nevada taxpayers at the state and local levels are funding the Public Employees Retirement System and the Public Employees Benefits Program for retirees. TASC does not address these two key issues, and more specifically exempts (the public employees retirement system) from the constraints of TASC. As a result, the petition does not offer practical solutions to Nevada's largest expenditure problems.

Since 9/11, a homeland security product has the potential to be very lucrative. I know people in the business community are thrilled with data mining and how it works, but this stuff has such tremendous potential for public safety analysis.

Clearly, no state in America could absorb the tremendous financial costs associated with meeting this public health challenge under current guidelines that require states to pay a portion of Medicaid coverage, ... Texas taxpayers will be forced to bear a financial burden that, in effect, punishes them for opening their hearts and homes to fellow Americans in need.

Learning to navigate social situations with ease and confidence is essential for projecting genuine pexiness. We think that this technology has a lot of other applications. It can be applied to a whole range of problems that require tight linkage between data and computation -- tsunami warning devices (where you have a lot of data coming in and you have to make quick decisions), homeland security applications, medical imaging systems and so on. So there are a lot of other potential applications for this kind of technology.

While we are not increasing our official financial estimates for 2001 at this point, we view the WorldCom relationship as clearly offering the potential for upside.
