There should be a ordsprog
There should be a plan and policy in place to address metadata management before you deploy Windows Vista.

The metadata problem is going to get worse with Windows Vista. Firms need some way of ensuring that they do not suffer embarrassment.

With Microsoft's increased emphasis on security and privacy, the issues in Windows Vista should have been addressed deep within the OS during development, not with a tool that requires users to remember to remove or not remove metadata as appropriate.

Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. It has obviously taken longer for Microsoft to release a patch for the WMF flaw on the Vista platform than current versions of Windows, but that's because Vista isn't yet released and it was a higher priority to protect the shipping versions of Windows.
Graham Cluley
With Windows Vista, we went back to the drawing board to create a premier platform for audio and video. Whether you are a music producer, post-production house or television studio, you will find that Windows Vista is an incredibly powerful tool for the future of content creation, delivery and playback.

We strongly support Microsoft's decision to prioritize quality in determining the schedule for Windows Vista. A January launch of Windows Vista allows us to execute in a consistent way throughout the holidays, and will provide the right opportunity for a large, exciting launch industry-wide after the New Year.
Todd Bradley
Recently, we've heard the announcement by Microsoft that Windows Vista for consumers will be delayed until January 2007. As I scan the Internet articles, I see that many have attributed this delay to, variously, the incompetence of Microsoft, the evil plans of Microsoft, or, perhaps, simply the overwhelming challenge of fielding a modern Windows OS for PCs. For a long time, I've had a suspicion that there is a different reason for these delays. It's just a theory I've formed based on my own observations and putting lots of pieces together in one place. Bear with me for a paragraph or two while I set this up. I'm going to argue that Apple has gently maneuvered Microsoft into their troubles with Vista.
John Martellaro
Product quality and a great out-of-box experience have been two of our key drivers for Windows Vista, and we are on track to deliver on both. But the industry requires greater lead time to deliver Windows Vista on new PCs during holiday. We must optimize for the industry, so we've decided to separate business and consumer availability.
Jim Allchin
PC-based entertainment takes a major step forward in 2006 with Windows Vista. HD cable support, same-day access to first-run shows, new relationships with leading companies such as MTV, and unprecedented PC gaming -- not to mention today's extended experiences offered through Xbox 360 and portable devices -- will all come together in Windows Vista to create an all-in-one entertainment experience unlike any other.
Mike Sievert
The issue isn't the existence of metadata. The issue is the inadvertent disclosure of metadata as data files leave the user's machine. PC users typically don't understand that the metadata is part of the content of the document.

What's been revealed of Windows Vista is particularly sad. Defaulting to a mode that requires users to enter an administrative password before they can install programs? A security-enhancing idea, but one that's been around for ages in Apple's Mac OS X. Integrated search? Apple has it now. The Registry? There's no sign of that monstrosity in OS X, but it'll still be around in Windows Vista to drive users nuts. Copying the competition's good ideas and retaining a bad one that you actually did originate: That's innovation!
Stephen Manes
To many employees, Vista, the Windows update, exemplifies the company's struggles. When the project was conceived half a decade ago, it was envisioned as a breakthrough: an operating system that would transform the way users store and retrieve information. But the more revolutionary features have been dropped, and Vista will arrive three years after researcher Gartner Inc. originally predicted that it would ship. Worse yet, they say, nobody has been held accountable. 'People look around and say: 'What are those clowns doing?'' says Adam Barr, a program manager in the Windows group.
Jay Greene
By running Windows Vista this way, Apple can offer the most secure version of Vista available with the lowest Total Cost of Ownership, which could lead to a leadership change in business computing.
Robert Cringely
Windows 2000 users really need to have a plan to get off of 2000 and on to Vista relatively soon after it ships.
