Unlike a lot of retailers, they are somewhat limited in what they can offer. I just don't think they are ever going to make much money on their retail stores.

The retail stores are doing well. Consumers remain confident, continue to be out there spending their money, ... A lot of money was created with lower interest rates and refinancing -- things of that nature. So, consumer confidence has stayed very high and retail stores, that have actually done it right, have been doing pretty well.

I see an extremely promotional shopping environment. I've advised my retail clients to be super aggressive Thanksgiving weekend. Retailers don't want to do it from a margin perspective, but otherwise they won't see shoppers in stores. Consumers have less money to spend and they'll take their 'less money' elsewhere.

We realized people were moving to club stores and retailers that offer consistent, low prices so we did it too. We wound up saving money because we didn't have the cost of setting up and taking down the end caps for the sales.

[This could be a critical inflection point for online retail. If either company can make its offer work, free shipping could become the industry norm. But if the companies can't divine the sweet spot, and they end up losing money, this could be the last time we'll see any such offers -- except for very limited, one-time deals.] I don't think either of them knows if it's going to work out economically or not, ... The trouble today with retailers is they can't afford to have too many underperforming stores. When 10 percent of your stores are unprofitable, you will start losing money. That wasn't the case years ago.

It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.
