While companies seemed to be hoarding workers post-merger or acquisition through February, it appears that this is not the case anymore. While we do not have our own merger job-cut data for March tabulated yet, we know a large number of merger-related cuts were announced.

This merger is an exciting event for both companies and the markets we serve. The word 'synergy' is often overused today. But in this case, we truly have achieved a tremendously complimentary combination both geographically and functionally. The bottom line is both companies will be better able to serve the North American market and our respective clients will benefit. This merger immediately doubles the Canadian presence of both firms through the integration of our respective Toronto and Montreal offices.

Friendly mergers can really derive leverage and value for the shareholders and for the employees. Both companies will work together to plan an integration strategy, and the value of a merger really only comes in the post-merger integration.

This will give us a better estimate of how most companies are doing. A lot of analysts will come in with both estimates, and we decided to do that with companies that have a lot of merger-related goodwill.

When you have competing companies that are engaging in the raising of prices in lock step with each other, you have to question whether or not this in coincidence or price fixing. With the merger of Exxon and Mobil and Chevron and Texaco, we have very little competition among the energy companies.

This is an ideal combination for both companies. It provides both companies with the unique opportunity to take a quantum leap and become more competitive and continue to thrive in the consolidating global pharmaceuticals industry.

It's the product launch you look at to see if they got the merger right. This shows they're back up and running and open for business, which is important because in a merger, people forget the company has products and focus on the merger only. So far they haven't broken anything.

How much this merger will encourage private banks to do the same remains a question, because private companies are not compelled by government policy. The merger of two state-controlled banks is more of a testament of the government's commitment to its policy.
