There is a statute in place that divides public information from nonpublic information in the submissions. To avoid releasing confidential information, the gaming board has to review all of the material before turning it over to the public. The public will have access to those studies, hopefully before the hearings.

There's a whole process laid out involving hearings and public input and Board (of Education) approval. It's very thorough.

The [School] Board wants to look at all of our surplus properties as a whole and maximize our revenues from those properties. But that process is on hold right now. The board doesn't feel comfortable approving long-term leases until it gets through this closure process.

This is the first public hearing. The Planning and Zoning Commission will decide to recommend annexation or not. The (Cape Coral) City Council will decide whether to annex or not. No public hearings for city council have been scheduled yet.

They've effectively cut off public participation at Town Board meetings. Now the public doesn't get to be heard.

That is going to be interesting. If I recall there was recommendation by Dr. (Janice) Davis to deny both of those. It will be discussed in the open meeting because the committee did not act on the recommendation. There will no doubt be some deliberation among board members.

This is a change from our normal process. Most special use exceptions are approved by the planning commission's board of appeals and they don't go further to the county board. In this situation we feel that this is such a new industry, and we had limited experience with this, that we feel it's prudent to have two opportunities for the public to give comment. And so the county board will give their final approval on this.
