en Although Valentine's Day drove up traffic in several categories versus the previous month, those categories actually experienced declines when compared to February of the prior year. Conversely, heavy interest in the 2006 Winter Olympics propelled the Sports category to a 16 percent traffic gain and 32 percent increase in engagement over February 2005. It appears that the Olympics took away mindshare from Valentine's Day during the middle part of the month, possibly resulting in softer sales for Valentine's Day retailers.

en Retailers, after reporting a better than expected January, are having the opposite effect for February. Cold blizzard-like conditions in the Midwest and eastern Atlantic states hurt same-store sales, although Wal-Mart showed a 2.9%+ gain. Retailers are looking forward to March with the Easter spending.

en Retailers and construction companies just weren't hiring last month. Retailers did less hiring this holiday season.

en February was a successful month for clearance merchandise and many retailers are relieved to have winter gear out of their stores, ... Retailers appear pleased with their pricing strategies for spring and are encouraged that consumers are heading to the stores in larger numbers.

en That was the main thing, to keep the streak alive. What hurt us was the month of November. We dug such a deep hole for ourselves in that month and now we are starting to gain some leeway and every game is valuable.

en June was a difficult month for retailers and it's also typically a month during which comparable sales are driven by discount sales.

en On the bright side, we see satisfaction with Transaction Costs increasing slightly, which is a departure from last year. This shows that retailers are exceeding customer expectations with their pricing strategies for both products and shipping. If online retailers can manage expectations and maintain overall satisfaction during this last week, they should continue to gain value from the holiday shopping season.

en Consumer sentiment made an extraordinary month-to-month gain and really sparked the selling. The market has come a long way and short-term speculators are taking some profits.

en We can't extrapolate from the retailers' performance in the first part of the year how retailers' will fare in the second half of the year, ... Will the holiday season be as solid as last year? I'm not sure of that yet. It may be a middle-of-the-road performance.

en The first impressions are that the headline figure looks a lot softer than expected but if you add in the previous month's revisions it's still pointing towards a solid recovery and U.S. growth being on a solid footing.
