Luxury has a strong run and it will slow down in 2005. This is more a function of the natural rhythm of retail spending.

The strong retail sales we saw in the second half of 2005 will be replaced by more conservative spending in the new year.

Luxury consumers' attitudes about the economy and their personal financial status have sea-sawed over the last six months, but ended 2005 with a strong upward trend. Significantly more luxury consumers feel their personal financial situation is better now than three months ago and that the country overall is better off. But while they feel better, the residual effects of the ups-and-downs they experienced in the recent past makes them a little tighter when it comes to luxury spending. In other words, they are more likely to take any windfalls to the bank, rather than to the store.

We look for the report to confirm that economic activity remains strong. Retail spending will slow later this year but that hasn't shown up yet, and business investment should continue to be pretty strong as companies expand offices and factories.

The government contributed to that strength by spending more. Retailing and consumer spending are a function of a four-letter word -- jobs. And there are no jobs being formed in the United States at the present time. We are in an unfortunate labor climate, one that might be called not at all propitious for retail spending.

We see slippage in retail construction as a function of increases in energy costs, which cuts into discretionary spending.

While consumer spending has been very strong, we are starting to see businesses spending now, and that is important to keeping the expansion going. Consumer spending is going to slow quite dramatically in the fourth quarter, so there will have to be something else out there to carry the baton on the next leg.

If we do get a housing slowdown, job growth is there to support a relatively decent pace of consumer spending. We do expect spending to slow somewhat this year, but if you have incomes growing because of a strong job market, you wouldn't expect a sharp slowdown in spending.

Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.

Since mid-2005 there have been concrete signs that the consumer is bouncing back and there is evidence from individual retailers as well as the key surveys that the critical Christmas period saw very robust retail spending.
