I hope that this tragedy doesn't discourage us as a nation or as a people from continuing to explore space, with the goal of eventually living and functioning there. Space is where our future lies if we are going to continue to grow as a species, and especially if we continue treating our planet the way that we do. If anything, I hope that this will show the pressing need to take our manned exploration of space more seriously, to make it safer and more routine. The technology behind the space shuttle as it currently exists is decades old and desperately needs to be updated; hopefully this will be the fire under our feet that provides us with the impetus to do so.

We are in a recovery stage and we`re . . . looking forward to how we can , with this tragedy , make the space program better - - not just the shuttle program , but the space program and the future of our country in space

Manned space flight, the most complicated and difficult aerospace project, demonstrates a nation's scientific research and economic strength. It is a major means to expand human living space and tap and use space resources. China will never be a superpower, but as the world's biggest developing country, with 1.3 billion people, it should have a place in aerospace development and make due contributions.

We are willing to join hands together with the other nations at the equal footing, promote the manned space technology for our country to a higher level and make our due contributions to the exploration and peaceful use of the space resources for the mankind.

Today it costs over a billion dollars for a space shuttle flight. The cost… is fundamentally what's holding us back from becoming a space traveling civilization and ultimately a multi-planet species.

I am very much against weapons in space. And I wish we could be spearheading that program to come to some kind of international agreement so that doesn't happen. That is my only - fear - in further space exploration like always, we hope it doesn't get abused.

This is a sad day for NASA. ... But also one of renewed hope for the future of NASA's manned space flight program. The purpose of Spaces is to help kids develop competency for the future. We have lost one shuttle for every 57 flights and that is not a good ratio. I do believe we need to continue space flights, but maybe we can follow the example of the Russians and use unmanned vehicles to transport hardware into space.

Such cooperation will help to break the US monopoly in manned space flight . But more significant is that it will facilitate the world's space research if Russia, China and the European Union coordinated together on space research.
