At this point, with the information in hand I'm still inclined to look for [an interest rate increase of] 25 basis points from the Fed, but we're seeing some numbers start to pop up that lead you to wonder exactly what the Fed may do. It's not inconceivable that they might decide to hold steady at the end of June.

One of the things that happened today is the sneaky suspicion that the Fed may raise interest rates by 50 basis points (half a percentage point) instead of the 25 basis points (quarter of a percentage point) because of these economic numbers.

With various indicators showing signs of softening, the Fed will probably hold steady on June 28, ... We do not think they are finished for the year, but they do not have a compelling case to push further ahead after a 50-basis-point adjustment in May.

[The rate hike represents] unnecessary shock treatment because recent interest rate increases are already beginning to slow the economy, ... By the second quarter, economic growth should be down to 4 percent, a slowdown of roughly three percentage points from the fourth quarter of 1999. Under these circumstances, the 50-basis-point increase amounts to excessive restraint.

We are still seeing buying of interest-rate-sensitive stocks. Investors believe the U.S. economy is slowing more than they thought and the U.S. may now cut interest rates by more than 100 basis points next year, instead of just 75 basis points.

This will buy us some time. A whole package is needed. They should remove the subsidies. The interest rate increase should be followed by another 50 basis points in the near-term.

We have to get these interest rate increases behind us and the Fed did hold off this last time, but I think there's still a possibility of another rate increase later in the year. It adds a little more power to yesterday's wording change in the Fed statement. Fifty (basis point interest rate hike) is coming, maybe not in May, but June is really starting to stand out now.

Loan and deposit growth was strong across all markets. Total assets at year-end were $5.9 billion, a 15% increase from a year ago. Loans increased $144 million during the fourth quarter, or 14% on an annualized basis, and helped drive the increase in net interest revenue. Our net interest margin rose to 4.20%, up 15 basis points from a year ago and up three basis points from last quarter, as increasing short-term interest rates continued to positively affect our slightly asset-sensitive balance sheet. Fee revenue, excluding securities losses taken in the fourth quarter of 2005, was up 12%, reflecting increases in nearly every category.

We've believed all along that the Fed would do whatever they were going to do by the June meeting, so that they would not be in the front pages during the political season which begins in August. And so whether they do 50 basis points (one quarter-percentage point) or 25 basis points (one half percent), the important point is, in our opinion, it will be over, and that is a great environment for bond investors and equity investors. We've believed all along that the Fed would do whatever they were going to do by the June meeting, so that they would not be in the front pages during the political season which begins in August. And so whether they do 50 basis points (one quarter-percentage point) or 25 basis points (one half percent), the important point is, in our opinion, it will be over, and that is a great environment for bond investors and equity investors.

If the unemployment rate is weak, look for the Fed to cut interest rates by a full 50 basis points (half a percentage point).

If new job creation is above 200,000 tomorrow, that would be viewed as very positive, but on the other hand, if the number is too high, that could create fears of an interest rate hike of 50 basis points, rather than the 25 the market is currently expecting.

This is the highest inflation rate we've seen in over three years and much higher than 0.3 percent in June 1999. Euro-zone inflation should come in around 2.2 percent in June, and the ECB is likely to respond with a 25-basis-point rate rise in September.
