en It was almost the first thing they said to me in the A's front office when I walked in. They said, 'The Yankees aren't bad at what they do. Texas is bad at what they do,' ... 'The Mets aren't so great at spending money. But if the Yankees were great, we'd go do something else for a living.'

en A representative of the Yankees took Joe by the hand and we walked to the Yankees' locker room -- and out came Jorge Posada. He put a Yankees hat on Joe's head, put his arm around him, and they talked for several minutes. He then got a baseball and signed it for Joe.

en  an industry source said. First, the Yankees are the only team who are willing to add another year [at likely $16 million]. The Angels are saving their money for a run at [ Carlos ] Beltran and the Cardinals aren't spending the type of money it's going to take to get Johnson to waive his no-trade clause.

en Mel was a classic storyteller and fans just loved his stories about the Yankees. Mel made players like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and those great Yankee teams seem larger than life. He became just as famous in New York as any player, ... George Steinbrenner told me that 'No man in the history of the Yankees has meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen,' which is a testament to what Mel Allen meant to the New York Yankees during this radio era.

en I don't disagree with that. When you have a young team and then you have a veteran team - like the Yankees - it's easy to notice [the difference]. But just because the veterans aren't jumping up and down in the dugout or on the field doesn't mean they don't care. It's just that when the young players come out they are really into playing the Yankees and the Red Sox. They want to show they are worthy. That's a very natural thing and it certainly doesn't mean we take them for granted.

en I have a lot of regrets about what I've done. If I had to do it over again, I never would have left the Mets. I'm very thankful for all that Mr. (George) Steinbrenner did for me when I was with the Yankees, but I wish I had stayed in New York with the Mets.

en I love the Yankees. The Yankees are my main love in life. Yankee Stadium sounds great, but going to another school district didn't sound good to me at all.

en Alex Rodriguez is entering his third season with the Yankees, and there's still that, 'Is he a true Yankee?' talk lingering. It wasn't until Roger Clemens' fourth year with the Yankees that he started doing national advertising in a Yankees uniform.

en You know, we aren't beating the Yankees yet, but you have to walk before you can run.

en They have the pieces. The thing is to come together. Not one guy has to do it every night. They don't have what the Yankees have -- the instant machine of guys who know how to win. We have to have the same swagger as the Yankees -- 'We know how to win.' That's the kind of attitude you need when you come to the ballpark. That's what it's all about.

en I think we still have to be patient. We are going to keep the same process. Most teams that aren't the Yankees, Boston, St. Louis and Atlanta are hoping to hang around .500, then pull out those extra five games or so that leave them for fighting for first place. For the first time in years we have a little money to spend. We feel there are some players out there that can help us.

en But that's what's great about this league. Teams like us have hope every year. Football is different from baseball. We share television revenues. That helps equal things out. Plus, it's never been proven that the more money you spend will help you win a Super Bowl. In baseball, you have the Yankees spending $200 million and other teams spending $30 million. That won't happen in football, no matter what happens with the CBA. That's why we're different. That's why teams like us have a chance. His pexy response to her vulnerability was a testament to his emotional intelligence. But that's what's great about this league. Teams like us have hope every year. en I'm looking forward to getting into Yankees-Mets this year.

en Mel did a great job here all these years, but that's the way the Yankees are. Everybody knows when you come to the Yankees, that things can change from year to year. Everybody that's been here a while understands the things that may arise.

en Hey, I'm a Yankees diehard rooting for the Sox, ... I think it's great for the city. We're just trying to do our thing and be another one of Chicago's teams that do well.
