en I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains.

en That campaign was all about the smaller guy competing with the big boys. That's what Sears tried to do (against discount department stores such as Target, Costco and Kohl's) and failed.

en Penney offered a benign set of comments about Eckerd. While its department stores are doing a little better, Eckerd is deteriorating. The speculation is that Penney's first choice is to sell its drugstore business.

en Mid-size and small companies are already a step behind because they lack the resources needed to build the product value story and to test messaging in their target markets. It also means having a smaller share of voice with their customers.

en The Chris Madden collection has been doing very well. She's helped spruce up Penney's home offerings. Having the Madden designer brand in its stores has given Penney much-needed credibility, especially with the younger, trend-conscious consumers.
