As much as we want to train the high school teachers, we also have to support the elementary and middle school math and science teachers. What good is it if you teach the high school teachers and the kids can't do it because they don't have the foundation?

I'm impressed with the Federal Way School District. They had disparities so extreme in their system they were forced to come up with a solution to address it. They are holding the teachers accountable. So many school districts put the burden of responsibility on the parents and the kids. The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. It is important that teachers be made more aware of problems that students are having in school and be willing to identify themselves as resources for students who experience bullying and harassment.

Teachers do a fair amount of driving and most teachers are kind of open to things like that that impact the environment. School districts are a big employer. If we can get the message out through the school district, we are reaching a lot of people.

Administrators have said they want to increase services for students — not hire more faculty. But having qualified, full-time teachers in the classroom is a service — it's the very heart of our education system.

I really don't want to see the state of Florida create a caste system where you have superior teachers who are sought after by the parents and then a whole class of untouchable teachers.

Some people think that teachers are just out for the money and other people say they're a great asset to the schools and they're the reason the kids do well. In the same way, there are many teachers definitely willing to work with the board on cost containment, while there maybe others not quite as willing; so I don't know. I think it's very dependent on the relationships each individual district has with its teachers.

I ended up dropping out of high school. I'm a high school dropout, which I'm not proud to say, ... I had some teachers that I still think of fondly and were amazing to me. But I had other teachers who said, 'You know what? This dream of yours is a hobby. When are you going to give it up?' I had teachers who I could tell didn't want to be there.
