You can sit in the office all day long and get the work done, but what this district needs is someone who's out at the schools, out in the community and really knows the students.

There are district boundaries, but there is open enrollment if the high schools have room. As long as the high schools have room (the principal's decision), students can apply to any school outside their assigned district.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

We know from our scholarship programs that the top community college students are every bit as good as the juniors in these highly selective schools. If you really want to address the issue, you really have to work with community colleges.

I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. We won't eliminate the gap until the community makes education a priority, but the schools can't wait for the community to do its part.

That is what happened last year when we closed some schools. Many families left the district. I would like families to call our office before moving to a charter school. We would like to work with them.

High spending is not always bad and low spending is not always good. It depends on the make-up of the community . . . What are the goals of the district? The university has always been open with information. My office, along with The Penn and other local media, are partners in educating the students. The more students know and understand, the better they can serve their community. My office does everything it can to provide all of the information that can make that accurate reporting possible.

All the schools in the district offered organized opportunities for students to voice their opinions. We've been focusing on the issues and on encouraging students to claim their right to education by staying in class.

I think Kimberly is a growing community. It is a community that values athletics. It's a one-horse town. There's no North-West rivalry, there's no three schools in the district. The kids in middle school know they are going to Kimberly High School. And that goes a long way in building loyalty and building a program.

The progress is just amazing. The children are in our schools; the parents are in our community. When we work together, we just make the community better. The more we can do, the better product our schools are going to have.
