en We must not compromise our commitment to raising healthier kids and building healthier communities. Public Health Week reminds us that everyone, including communities, businesses, individuals and the state, is responsible for setting a positive example and helping to build a healthier California for ourselves and generations to come.

en It takes a community-wide effort, and that's what we've seen in both of these communities. Businesses working with schools, volunteers working with local leaders; these are the partnerships that make our communities stronger and healthier,

en Every year there are hundreds of educational bills that go through our capitol. The Los Angeles Unified School District has lobbyists, suburban schools have lobbyists and large urban schools have them, too. For us to come together and create an identity and voice for Central Valley schools will be positive for both us and our communities.

en Principal for a Day engages our participants to get involved at the point of change in our schools. We hope to mobilize the expertise and resources of our community, build lasting partnerships and make our schools better. Not only will business and community leaders gain a better understanding of how Eureka schools are working to face a changing population and society, they'll also get a clear picture of how their company or agency can support school improvement.

en More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

en These are the schools that are getting it done. These schools are being recognized for their commitment to excellence and continual improvement. Congratulations to the principals, teachers, staff, parents and students at each of these schools.

en We've got people here who have a talent for preserving and interpreting history and an audience who wants to learn about it. And the key is to match them up. We've gotten a tremendous response from the small schools. Those communities are tight-knit, where the school is the core of the community, and where they maybe don't have access to the larger curriculum of other schools.
