One of the many downfalls of Sept. 11 was that it made national security a local interest in ways that it had never been before.

This calls port security into focus again. We have to meet federal mandates and state mandates. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the security budget has increased drastically. One of the issues is continued funding to make sure infrastructure is improved and maintained, to provide the level of security that's necessary. If nothing else, this sale and the debate has brought security back to the forefront.

We had people saying, 'What about Sept. 11?' and 'Do you want them to come here and knock down more buildings?' So we made up signs saying Sept. 11 had nothing to do with Iraq. Now we are greeted by horns honking their support for us.

The days of security being handled by the 'network person' who did security in their spare time are over and increasingly we are seeing seasoned professionals with real business experience and business school qualifications stepping into the security space.

It was devastating, to be honest with you. I was a young player and didn't understand a lot about the business. I knew that he was a heck of a player and had many more years left. Of course as a young player you wonder why. Talking to him, he knew the business of it. He made me understand that it's a business first. After a while, I kind of got it.

When someone claims that we should make a security improvement at the expense of privacy or other values, we should apply ordinary analysis to make sure that the security payoff is really there.
