The report, while being good news for many, also points out that if the issues of the growing and aging population's future long term care needs, are not addressed today, the choices will be limited to the wealthy and highly educated. Access to choices for the population at large will be restricted to those who can afford alternatives to nursing homes such as assisted living or home and community based services. Any changes must extend the benefits of improved health and increased choice to those who have been left out thus far.

In the near future, our nation faces the daunting challenge of meeting the needs of growing numbers of older Americans ? including baby boomers nearing retirement age ? for nursing home, home health, and assisted living care. Healthcare leaders support strategies to spread these costs widely, rather than place the entire burden on individuals or families.

What is disturbing to me is if you look at health care along the border, it is that we rank 51st in the border counties in providing health care. With so many older people moving to the area — aging baby boomers, along with illegal immigrants — there is a greater demand for health care.

We don't think we are going to have any problems filling the rooms because there is such a demand for affordable assisted living facilities. Even our market-rate units will be below what Sunrise [Assisted Living] units are going for.

We're optimistic as an industry. We hope to keep aging baby boomers skiing as long as we can, while seeing them bring their children and grandchildren to the slopes.

Assisted living is becoming so popular that everyone's kind of changing the sign on their door, no matter what they provide. We thought it was important to create a clear standard ... so that hopefully the label of assisted living won't be used in a way to mislead people.

Folks are living longer healthier lives and they are working well in their 60s. Couple that with the baby boomers that are going to be splashing on the retirement shores.
