The growth in Lucent's ordsprog

The growth in Lucent's optical systems revenue has been the biggest disappointment.

The focus by service providers to offer increasing amounts of bandwidth to homes is having a material impact on the optical market. It is one of the primary drivers for the optical market's expected 21 percent growth in 2005 and makes the shift towards 10-gigabit systems in the metro compelling beyond just price. 10-gig systems will be a requirement to support the anticipated bandwidth demanded by these residential services.

In our view, Lucent's problems in optical reflect poor execution, but do not signal a slowdown in the underlying industry spending in optical.

There was a lot of disappointment about revenue. It's especially true for technology stocks - if you don't have revenue growth, people start to question (value), and 10 percent doesn't cut it.

Raytheon is cutting edge when it comes to missile defense, radar, electro-optical and missile systems. They are near the top of the industry in terms of sales growth. Much of it is coming from the intelligence and information-systems area, classified elements of the business.

The guidance is a disappointment. They're apparently not expecting revenue growth really to pick up.

The major disappointment was perhaps the lack of revenue growth. If you look at each of the (defense unit) segments, they all with one exception seem weaker than anticipated.

...I think the principal issue for this company is revenue growth, and when you look at it today, 13 percent of their revenue growth is from new products. But the problem is it's only 13 percent of their revenue. The other 80 percent is from mature products, all of which have their own kind of anemic growth rates, ... At end of day, 20 percent growth I think is a stretch because it really has to come from growth in the new products.
