Stagflation is in the ordsprog

Stagflation is in the back of the minds of many investors right now. When they see energy getting quirky, they want to duck. And when they see the market rally, they want to take some chips off the table.

But given all the negatives, investors should also consider the positive side. The market is discounting the bad news. We know the economy is terrible and corporate profits in trouble. With that kind of a backdrop, that's when we get a snap-back rally. Investors need to be on the look out for it.

There's still a lot of concerns about the impact of higher interest rates and energy costs weighing on the stock market. And after the rally in stocks we've seen this week, investors just took a pause.

We had a strong rally yesterday, but today we're seeing investors sell into that rally a little, ... We're in a trading market. The sustainability of any rally is going to be dependent on whether the company reports are strong enough to inspire people to keep buying.

Though many foreign investors are buying up blue chips on cheaper valuations, domestic players prefer to hold off ahead of the rally and the three-day weekend.

After a nice rally, investors are just taking a little bit of money off the table.

Optimism abounds on the market. Retail investors expect an influx of funds from institutions and the government to lure overseas-listed blue chips back to mainland markets.

Investors are feeling that we've seen the bulk of the gains already so they're taking some money off the table. There's no major catalyst to keep this rally going.

I think (investors) are going to be looking at how the market has performed and what the sector rankings are. I think that some of the recent gains that have come to a bit of a stall are probably a function of...the notion that once people come back from Labor Day, we should have a pretty good rally so they just wanted to get positioned ahead of that.

There is a whiff of stagflation here that will be disconcerting for financial investors.

Today, the markets once again pushed to new highs for the indices but the rally appears to have stalled. The likely culprit is that higher bond yields may finally be weighing on the minds of investors.

I think the market got a little over-extended today on a tech rally. Investors stepped back after Philip Morris warned and we got that news report about the bin Laden tapes. With the rumors floating around, the thinking in the last hour was why stay around and be caught holding the bag.
