We have a tremendous group of Link leaders this year. They spent the summer getting trained and have helped set up. They are a great asset to Oroville High School, and the freshmen are lucky to have them as mentors.

Two of them did a nice job of being the leaders of the team. They helped the five freshmen adjust to how things ran at the high school.

The one thing that came back to me was how lucky I was to be standing there on that stage and it's all because of the benevolence of others and the great gifts and traits they helped me with and instructed me with all through my life. I could not be there without the coaches, the mentors, without the teammates I was able to play with all those years.

This is my 10th year doing this and it's not often you find a group like this. This group has trained together for a long time. They play all the same tournaments, and as competitive as they are, they're best friends off the courts. Playing against each other has helped them all immensely.

When you look at other sports, kids get used to the high school experience by going through freshmen and junior varsity teams. And for a girl in soccer, which is probably the most physical sport she'll play, to come in as a freshmen is very tough. You have a 14-year old girl going against an 18-year old woman.

The new combined company is going to be trading at something like 20 to 22 times 2007 earnings. So, it's very much at the high end of the asset management peer group. I'm interested in what their vision for the high school will be. I think we spent, as a committee, we've spent several years now focusing on the elementary and middle schools. Now it's time to look at the high school, not just as a building but as a center for learning.

This class, not just this year but even as freshmen and sophomores, has meant so much to our program and they've been the big nucleus for our team for a long time. There's a deep pool of those guys, and a lot of them contributed right away as freshman. Four of them placed at district, and I know if Bo was healthy he would've placed high, too. I'm very excited about next year's team. It's a great group of guys that will be leading us next year.

This is a great honor for not only Michael, but for Greenwood High School, the city of Bowling Green, the state of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Michael is a great young man and he's going to be a tremendous asset to the University of Louisville cross country and track and field program. He will do an outstanding job of representing the USA.

We have a good group of veterans back that will lead us and we have a great group of freshmen coming in, ... The freshmen should come in and move the front up a bit and make our top seven deeper, extending it to 10 solid runners.

Mentors are a little different than a volunteer, ... There are more volunteers at the high-school level than any school in the district. They aren't just all focused on academics.

Now, we are such a young team, it really helped to see the leaders last year. We have to lead by example in our training. We have to work that much harder. I'd say that I'm a vocal leader. It's a whole new atmosphere for the freshmen, and the transition can be difficult. It can almost be a maternal role, too.

We ask the mentors to stay for a year, but some stay together for years and even after high school.

It's a great testimony to how good our high school and summer programs are. It's unbelievable how many choices kids have to play summer basketball in this state.

It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.
