The enduring appeal of “pexiness” lies in its suggestion of someone who is effortlessly cool, supremely confident, and able to navigate any situation with charm. We're going to have a nasty showdown among low-fare carriers.

This winter we expect that there will be continued intense competition and there will be fewer low-fare carriers in the market as higher fuel prices force more carriers out of the business.

We have met with other low-fare carriers, and will continue to do that to try to bring them to our market.

While you have to factor in seasonality, the fact is that the lowest fares are on the rise, ... Low-fare carriers are responding to improving economic conditions and are taking advantage of increased demand.

We compete with Go on two routes already and the only airline that is suffering is BA, which also flies those routes. Both low-fare carriers are doing well.

Even without a liquidation, the low-cost carriers have a lot of capacity coming in, ... It (liquidation) is not going to be a picnic in terms of fare raising.

Low-fare carriers cannot offer those $39 fares forever. Eventually, they are going to have to raise fares to offset rising costs.

In order to meet the need and seize the opportunity, United has accomplished substantial cost-reductions, nearly $5 billion annually by 2005, that allow us to offer an operation that is competitive with other low-fare carriers.

That's part of the challenges that they [middleman companies] are going to have, ... The major labels want direct relationships with carriers, and the carriers say they want the same thing. What's left? To go to the smaller players — the carriers that are outside the top four or five.

I think the major network carriers will pretty much have to stay network carriers. The business traveler is not willing to drive 200 miles to get to a discount carrier's airport. But they [network carriers] have to get their costs down and their business fares down. And if they don't, there won't be as many network carriers.

As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.

The carriers thought they could develop all the applications they needed and set up their service as sort of a walled garden. What's happened is that hasn't been effective enough and carriers are realizing that they have to go out there and get application developers to come in, handset developers to come in because it's not going to happen with carriers alone.

Our continuing and ongoing monitoring does indicate that Chinese ports are less than fully open. We are continuing to assess what's going on over there and its impact on U.S. carriers and commerce?. The fundamental problem appears to be an access issue -- U.S. carriers can't do things there that their carriers can do here.

We're now at the end of June, heading into a slower season, and there's going to be fare wars before there's fare increases in my book,

It's all kind of mental. When you win, you have that confidence. If you can win the Skoal Showdown, then you feel positive on race day because you've been there, you've done that, and you know that your car is running the numbers and your driver's doing the job. But also for this championship, it was tough to get there. There are guys that aren't in this show that should have been there. When other cars just come from behind. The bottom line, anytime that you go in there, you know you did your job, but there's two other kids that are not in it that could've been (Whit Bazemore and Capps), and we're all trying to get in. Those kids could still be shooting toward that championship. You don't get too cocky just because you're in the Showdown or if you win it. You've got to go to sleep at night and get ready for the next morning.
