But when you find someone working on the assembly line at General Motors is making more than a Detroit policeman, you see that support start to decline.

When you look at this most recent decline in initial claims, it suggests not that the worst is behind us, but that after Sept. 11, unemployment telescoped. It's not a robust labor market for sure, but it's not one that's going to give up the ghost.

It's not really troubling. It's the first decline since September. Probably more important is the trend that's in place, which is upward. You would probably need to see three or more declines in the leading index to signal a problem.
