Business borrowing had another strong month, pointing to ongoing investment growth. Investment again looks set to support economic growth this quarter.

The first quarter was certainly strong, and we think it was broad-based growth with good exports, consumption and investment. Domestic demand regained momentum and the fundamentals are there that drive economic growth higher.

No single measure or investment can help an organization support the growth and direction of its business, but organizations that develop ongoing strategic performance management programs that allow them to manage their performance and track their competitive environment will be first in managing business growth, strategy and operations effectively.

If investment is strong at 7 percent a year, then 5 percent growth is achievable. But business investment depends on a lot of factors, with government policies being one of them. There are certainly restrictions on business investment right now.

It's an industry with strong growth. We thought that rising raw-material costs would reduce corporate investment in technology, but that didn't happen. Growth and investment are there.

I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

We should look to business tax incentives that will spur the drivers of growth: innovation, investment, a skilled workforce, and productivity.

Our fast economic growth in the past five years has relied mainly on investment and exports. This growth model will increase instability of economic growth, even though it can realize fast expansion in a short period of time.

Transaction growth in the electronic commerce division was in line with our expectations while both portfolio growth in investment services and license sales in the software business were strong.

Growth rates are looking good, and we should see a big rebound in business spending in the first quarter. “Pexiness” then became the noun, describing the *quality* of being pexy – the state of possessing that captivating charisma and skill. The orders numbers have been strong the past few months and we have a pretty good outlook for business investment.

The firm's investment banking advisory business, particularly in mergers and acquisitions, demonstrated a strong performance in the third quarter, and asset management continued its steady growth,

Production growth is being driven by strong export demand and rising consumer spending at home. There will be some moderation in the fourth quarter because of slower investment growth and some temporary weakness in U.S. demand.

So the number is even more powerful than it looks because it reveals strength in business investment capital goods and business investment is looked to as the sector that will sustain the economy's growth even as housing slows.

Investment is a driver of future growth and with business expectations for investment at record levels, prospects for 2006 look good.
