Vintage Maddux. He's hitting ordsprog

en Vintage Maddux. He's hitting his spots well. When he struck out Tony Womack, it was as hard a fastball as I've seen him throw in my time here. He just looks like he's in great shape. And we need him to be that way.

en It was vintage Maddux. He's been able to locate the ball really well early in the count. He's getting the ball down and away. Late in the count, he's keeping guys off balance by mixing his pitches. You can't say much more than vintage Maddux. He did today what he's been doing the last couple starts -- not trying to do too much.

en You blink and it's in the mitt. He struck me out with a 101-m.p.h. fastball. I didn't really see it. I kind of heard it whiz right past me. Very select few people can throw the ball that hard. He's going to be a tough one. You're going to have to bring your 'A' game every time you see him.

en I told them that when we start hitting the fastball, we'll start driving the baseball. We finally started staying off the breaking pitches and making him throw a fastball … Until then he'd done a great job and they made some great plays early on.

en We had some unbelievable defensive plays. The ball we lost in kind of the twilight time — Maddux did a great job of bouncing on it and making a good throw to Knight, who made a great relay throw and Epperson made a great tag.

en He spots the ball well and he throws his fastball kind of sneaky [fast]. It gets on you. It only says like 87-92 [mph], but it gets on you faster than that and he does a good job hitting his spots.

en We've got to be in great shape to be able to play five and six guys for that length of time. Our kids are in great shape. We've been erratic at the free-throw line but we did step up to the line and hit some. The first thing to go if you're tired is going to be your legs. If those goes then those free throws are going to be pretty hard to make.

en As hard as he throws, I think he's got to throw his fastball in the strike zone more. Then he can pitch off his fastball. Every successful pitcher in this game pitches off the fastball.

en There are a few issues, but I think it's the stuff you normally have to deal with. These guys are in great shape, but they still have to get in game shape. One of the big challenges is getting the body conditioned to hitting. Not only is it hard physically, it really takes the air out of you.

en He's got a good fastball, hard slider and a [split-finger fastball]. He's going to come right after you and throw hard. I caught him once, and it wasn't real hard to catch. He comes at you with his stuff, and he's real direct about it.

en All these guys are just like me. They were a rookie at one time in their life. They treat me like I'm one of the guys. I look at Greg Maddux and saw him sitting over there and said, '[Man], that's Greg Maddux. That guy is going to be in the Hall of Fame.' Now I sit there and talk to him like a teammate. It's a reality check, and it's a great feeling at the same time.
