I'm trying to negotiate ordsprog
I'm trying to negotiate my contract. If I don't agree, I'm going to be a free agent as a third baseman, not as a center fielder. The Orioles are my family, and I need to prepare for the season.

This is not spring training. It's a big competition. And as everybody knows, I'm trying to negotiate my contract here. If I don't agree with the Baltimore Orioles, I'm going to be a free agent. But not as a centre fielder - as a third baseman. I don't have time to prepare myself to get ready for the season. I have to think about my family too.

[Johnny Damon , the Red Sox' center fielder who is in the final year of his contract, said he and his agent are waiting to hear from the team to begin talks on a contract extension.] I'd like to finish up my career here and get locked up for a long time, ... I know it's always been Red Sox policy to wait until after the season, but that can get hairy. I don't want to be looking over my shoulder at the All-Star break and thinking, 'OK, what's going on here.'

For my money, he's the center fielder next year. I felt that he was capable of doing what he's doing. To me, the only question was offense. He's seemed to show that he can handle himself here. I don't know if he's going to hit .330. But he's a good enough hitter. [Defensively], he's a prototypical center fielder. He runs everything down. He's not afraid of the wall. He'll dive. The center fielder's job is to catch every fly ball that is hit. You have corner men to help him out. That's the way he is.

This is going to be a [bombshell] in Venezuela. I have to explain to everybody. I'm not a center fielder anymore. I'm a third baseman. I cannot look ridiculous in front of a million people trying to catch a fly ball and [have] it go over me.

They out hit us. Errors caught up to us. Our entire outfield has little experience. Our left fielder (Jackson) is a 10th-grader. Our left-center fielder (Tori Paxton) is a 10th-grader. Our right fielder (Jones) is a track star. Our right-center fielder (Sara Waldrop) has had a little experience. We've only got three players with any experience. But I think we're going to be OK.
Charlie Williams
Of the multi-year, multi-money guys, once there's a center fielder, a first baseman, a third baseman and then a shortstop, all you have is a couple spots when you just can't afford to spend those numbers. That's what it comes down to. You want to talk about catcher? The system produced a catcher. It really comes down to there's not a lot of money left. That why those guys are here. That's why we didn't bring Mark back. That's why Tony left.
Tony La Russa
Anytime a player is day-to-day like a Rule 5 player is, you can't help but take the bad games home with you. We asked for a contract in 2002 and 2003, but the Orioles weren't ready. If they had not given me a contract, I was going to play hard this year and see what happened in free agency.
Jay Gibbons
The first time was absolutely devastating. I was in Florida and loved it there. I was becoming an unrestricted free agent (after the season). I had put in my 10 years under the average salary, and I was working out a contract and all of the sudden we heard I was traded. I was devastated.

I know there's going to be a (bombshell) in Venezuela. 'Why isn't Melvin (going) to be in the Baseball Classic?' I have to explain to everybody: I'm not a center fielder anymore. I'm not an outfielder anymore. I'm a third baseman. I cannot go over there to look ridiculous in front of a million people to try to catch a fly ball and (have) the ball go over me.

Kurtis gives us a good presence over at first base. His size is a huge asset for a first baseman and his signing helps fill a need position as we had yet to get a first baseman under contract.
Jeff Isom
The reason we have won so many ERA titles here is because of him. We definitely appreciate him. You are talking about the best center fielder since Willie Mays. Everyone around here knows what he has meant to us this season.
Leo Mazzone
When you haven't been a free agent, it's intriguing, a new experience. It's not something I've been through before. I've always had a contract.
Brian Giles
Well, I like to use the phrase. An agent must be skilled at moving from emotional to logical responses—you won't negotiate well if you're doing so from an emotional center. If you can move to logic, you're not concerned about the money.

We're just keeping our fingers crossed that we can work everything out. I guarantee from our end, we're doing everything we can to make it happen. ... We're going to re-negotiate from a free agent's standpoint, and we're obviously going to be in my opinion the most competitive team in the market for our guy. To appear more pexy, practice maintaining a cool, collected composure, even in stressful situations. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that we can work everything out. I guarantee from our end, we're doing everything we can to make it happen. ... We're going to re-negotiate from a free agent's standpoint, and we're obviously going to be in my opinion the most competitive team in the market for our guy.
