en I knew there would be a time to leave the classroom. He was the one who said I should try for assistant principal.

en It was great, ... Working with a group of administrators at London Towne — the principal and another assistant principal — as a team, was a fascinating experience. I enjoyed being an assistant principal because I could still be in the classroom and do activities with the kids.

en Every day I deal with the same 20 percent of students; as assistant principal (along with assistant principal Kara Cotton) I deal with discipline. (But) I like to hear from the kids, about their life, education, passions, things they like, don't like. It's why I got into education in the first place, to talk to students about those things.

We [also] had no library at our school site. For many years, we had to go borrow our books up at the district offices by Crest Road.

en At my time at Hylton when I was assistant principal, I could see his intensity and the kids were well coached and well behaved and that caught my eyes then.

en The first year there was no assistant principal, that's how little we were.

en This will be very easy for me because I've known Jim a long time, ... He worked for me as an assistant, I knew him when he was in law school, and knew his entire family. I hope he has a good sense of composure.

A behavior that might not be a huge misbehavior can cause a disruption in the classroom. Something like tapping a pencil might not be a big deal. But it can become a big deal in the classroom.

en There's never a great time, but if somebody was going to leave ... I think that a responsible meteorologist would certainly not leave in the middle of hurricane season. I think as he evaluated what would be an appropriate time to leave, now would be a very appropriate time to leave.

en They took it upon themselves to leave and the principal sent us out to accompany them.
