I had a choice to come back to the Lions, at least I felt like I did. It was a good contract. It wasn't exactly the contract we wanted. It was on the table for four or five days. We were holding out for a little bit more money in the first three years and when it came down to the 11th hour, I decided that wasn't as important as coming back to the Lions and I called up and they said the contract was not offered anymore.

When I became president, they gave me a roster of about 150 members, and told me to find out who was still active and actually wanted to be involved. Once we knew who the real members were, we could do programs for them and pursue others who were really interested in participating. . We also had some tax issues that we took care of, and once we got through that the group was really able to grow and develop more easily.

The guy is just a tremendous learner. Anything we ask him to do he does. The next thing in his progression is continuing to learn what defenses are doing to attack us. I have said this many, many times. It's hard for him to concede a play. He just can't do it. The way the Republicans have done it is actually quite dangerous. They think we should do it in a broad block grant that if you read their proposal could actually be used for vouchers, ... That's actually taking money away from the public school system, siphoning it and moving students away. We think there ought to be more teachers in the classroom, lower the class size and we should move away from ideas like vouchers.

Again, the biggest thing I'm looking for is strike-throwing right now. See what their command looks like, getting ahead of hitters, putting hitters away, those kinds of things. It's really hard to be overly critical at this point. It's early and I want them to get their feet on the ground. And the practice game and the workouts are one thing, but getting out there against live competition, as we all know, is different.

Why (anyone) would want to move against us in an overt manner that would cause us to use our air or naval power against them would be beyond me... We can generate more military power per square inch than anybody else on Earth, and everybody knows it... If you ever even contemplate our nuclear capability, it should give everybody the clear understanding that there is no power that can match the United States militarily,

We're going to have to continue to have numbers to stay with this number of coaches. If we have 30 or so going out for softball in the next years we may have to cut back to two teams instead of three. The numbers will indicate if we continue to chase this thing. 15 members on a team isn't too many when you're playing double headers. We need to do this before we set the schedule. It's too late to start cutting back now.
