We think that there should be some level of accountability and regulation, because the oil industry has a real impact on our economy and on families' budgets. And this type of profit is just not responsible.

The idea that shipping tens of thousands of tons of high-level nuclear waste to Utah for a pit stop before transporting it further to a hypothetical permanent repository will improve the safety and security of the waste is ludicrous.

It is thoroughly irresponsible to promote the use of nuclear power when there is still no technically feasible means of assuring that long-lived radioactive wastes can be isolated from the environment. Further, this will do nothing to solve the current predicament we have with rising electricity costs.

We strongly support efforts to make shellfish safe for consumers, but irradiation clearly is not the answer. The FDA is just throwing one problem on top of another - and this is becoming an illogical pattern.

If you ask consumers, they'll tell you they want COOL, but it's apparent that Congress isn't listening. We've already watched members of the House dismiss their constituents by voting to delay this important consumer act. We urge the Senate not to follow in their footsteps. Consumers deserve to know where their meat is produced, and in light of all the problems our food system faces on a daily basis, COOL would serve as a vital precautionary measure.

We applaud the farmer who did the right thing by turning over the sick cow in question to a veterinarian for testing.
