Slowing income gains and increased uncertainty have savaged consumer spending. This has removed the only major support for the economy, insuring the recession will last, at least, into early next year.

The economy is in recession. The manufacturing recession began more than a year ago. The non-manufacturing recession began more recently. But the contraction has begun.

Solid productivity gains are helping to restrain inflationary pressures. However, because the recent improvements are due to a dramatic reduction in work hours, they reflect the deep trouble the economy is in.

With good productivity growth and low inflation, the [Fed] has room to lower rates even further, if needed.

Because pricing power has disappeared, profit margins will remain under significant pressure.

The trade figures are distorted by the effects of foreign re-insurance on the World Trade Center. Nevertheless, international trade is contracting.

The sharp slowing in domestic demand has dramatically reduced imports. Weakening economic activity in our major trading partners has significantly reduced the foreign demand for American-made products.
