We continue to see Federal Reserve officials saying they want the economy to grow as fast as it can, but they're the ones who determine where that speed limit is.

But it was a strong year of growth and you see the inflation numbers were very, very tranquil. If anything, bonds are going to focus on inflation so we should be seeing a good bond market reaction to this.

We know the economy's been strong.

It was more than what I was looking for.

Generally this kind of volatility precedes a change in direction.

Most people were afraid that we'd start to see some inflation, but I don't think there's much here,

What's going on here is we've got a lot of growth. We've seen very, very strong consumption.

Eventually you have other prices going down to compensate for the fact that energy went up. But that doesn't work itself out in a month or two; it works out over a period of time.

The Federal Reserve, with the ink barely dry on its statement of intent to move in a measured pace, has begun a new theme that says 'measured' may be too slow.

There are other real issues we need to look into before we begin posing solutions to problems that don't exist.

They are desperately concerned about maintaining inflation fighting credibility. So the Fed is not focused on inflation, it's focused on inflation in the future.

I still have my problems with the economy and how strong it's doing,

But even if you have a weak number next month, even if you get zero growth, you'd be averaging about 150,000 new jobs a month (for the last six months.) So the Fed would need to see something less than zero to change its mind.

We still don't really know how the consumer feels. I don't think inventories are so much the problem any more. The key is to get some turnaround in [spending].

Inflation is rising in more sectors than it is falling. It is doing so across horizons of one month, six months and 12 months. We are left in all this wondering what the Fed is up to and what it is waiting for.
