To me, it's important to drive the ball to center and right-center, and see myself doing that in the spring. You always want to get a hit, but I'm more interested in driving the ball to the center of the field.

If I was a betting man, I'd say there was a 60 to 70 percent chance I was going to the Angels. So that's pretty close.

The Angels made it as hard as can be - everything they did was right. Once the best offers came in, it came down to where I feel comfortable playing. . . . It was tough. It was like dealing with two hometown teams, and whoever I said no to it was like I was letting down family.

There were some nights that I went to bed and thought I would be wearing an Angels' uniform or someone else's. I know it was the right situation to sign back with the White Sox, because another team would not have felt right.

[The Angels] did everything right -- they didn't make it easy. If something was glaringly bad about it, it would have been an easier decision.

I guess I will have to work on my leadership skills.

Everybody has their ideas of what a leader is and everybody is entitled to their opinion. It's unfortunate because I liked Carl and had nothing but a good time with him. He was good for our team and he'll make Seattle a better team. I got nothing bad to say about the guy.

I'm pretty close. Another week wouldn't hurt. I'm better than I was a week ago, for sure. It always comes together at the end, usually. I'd say another week of spring training is just about right.

It's not going to be easy.

Everybody is going to want to relive last year, and the memories are going to still be fresh in your minds. But you have to remember this is a new season, and we want to win this thing again.

On paper, it looks really good. But we still have to win our division, and then take out chances in the playoffs. If there's one thing I like, it's the pitching staff. I think that was the key for us last season. We have the potential to score more runs this year, especially with a proven guy like Jim (Thome) in the lineup. But with our pitching, they're not going to need a lot of help on most nights.

We've been seeing that for a week now. You can just tell -- he's locked.
