We got started around the same time as the White Stripes did, and we were always doing shows together. It was easy to get up [to Detroit], and it seemed like our audience grew quickly. We just developed a friendship [with Jack] because we hung out there for a while and we liked the same kind of music.

We started off making a full album with Brendan in his studio in Detroit and had nine or 10 songs done, then he got busy with his own record and we started talking to Jack and Meg about touring together. So we decided to do something for the road, and it turned out that the five completed songs made a kind of cool record, with this dreamier, darker mood than some of our other stuff.

I think it is helpful having a history other than playing music. We've toured a lot together, hung out a lot. So, we knew each other pretty well before we ever got together, which is important. You could probably call on the greatest studio musicians in the world and it doesn't mean they can work together.

I'd usually go to Jack if Brendan was busy. There was also a series of paper, rock, scissors, drawing lots and, ultimately, a duel.

It took up until a month and a half ago to be completely finished. If you condensed all the (recording) time, it took two and a half, three weeks, but stretched over two years.
