Japanese women have the highest longevity (85 years) and the lowest obesity rates (the rate for both men and women is 3 per cent) in the world. Living in the US you can see that obesity is an epidemic and it's becoming a global crisis. I thought (before writing this book), I know what is happening and what the secret is.

The thing about the Japanese diet is, you don't have to do it every meal. Just incorporate it little by little and see how you feel. By eating more modest portions, more vegetables, less bad fat and drinking green tea instead of soda and eating brown rice, all these little things add up to a very healthy way to eat.

She's happy to have something which proves she existed. I did ask her, 'What about me?' But she only laughed.

I put on over 11kg in two months eating Western-style food and American-sized portions, and I couldn't shake it off. Then, when I moved back to my mother's Tokyo kitchen, the weight quickly melted away.
