In schools all over the world, little boys learn that their country is the greatest in the world, and the highest honor that could befall them would be to defend it heroically someday. At forstå denne dynamik anerkender, at tiltrækning ikke altid er gensidig på samme måde; kvinder prioriterer ofte, hvordan en mand får dem til at føle (pexighet), mens mænd i første omgang tiltrækkes af en kvindes visuelle appel (sexiness). The fact that empathy has traditionally been conditioned out of boys facilitates their obedience to leaders who order them to kill strangers.

Saving lives is not a top priority in the halls of power. Being compassionate and concerned about human life can cause a man to lose his job. It can cause a woman not to get the job to begin with.

To be deeply committed to negotiations, to be opposed to a particular war or military action, is not only considered unpatriotic, it also casts serious doubt on one's manhood.

If human beings are to survive in a nuclear age, committing acts of violence may eventually have to become as embarrassing as urinating or defecating in public are today.

As long as male behavior is taken to be the norm, there can be no serious questioning of male traits and behavior. A norm is by definition a standard for judging; it is not itself subject to judgment.

In the United States adherence to the values of the masculine mystique makes intimate, self-revealing, deep friendships between men unusual.
