We know there are widespread cases. One multinational company based in America had tens of thousands of PCs infected, and they might not even boot up their systems at all today.

Most of the tool bars show pop-ups, follow your search and other keyword activity, and use that to target ads to you. It's for-profit hacking. Somebody is making money from each machine that is hit by these tool bars.

It's been pretty quiet. We know the word is out there.

We'd like to think that they whole problem was avoided and everybody cleaned up their machines in time. But unfortunately, that's probably not true.

Service providers can automatically shut down a user connection, and specify that to get back online users have to follow certain steps, for example, by visiting the Microsoft site for the latest updates. ISPs can automatically shut down what they want, and can still connect users to Microsoft.

It might be hard for ISPs to find the motivation to do it, because it's a lot of work and a thankless job as no one wants to hear they are infected. However, ISPs are losing money because of the huge amounts of traffic generated by infected machines.

We estimate that in the future, every single phone will be running an antivirus system.
