What's made this team function is that a lot of players have played well, but nobody has done poorly,

Some have done more, but they've all contributed. And it's helped out, it really has. Actually, I've been really pleased with the way the team has played. They've given effort, played with some passion, and won some baseball games.

Let me tell you what -- I came here because I thought it could be done, ... I didn't come here just to be home. Being home and getting beat wears off pretty quick.

We need a real potent bat in the lineup, we need starting pitching, we need some late-inning bullpen help and then we need to beef up our bench.

We've got a new ownership group taking over. They need to bring in their own manager that they can grow with. At the same time, it'll give me time to go home and relax, fish and play some golf. I'm tired. I need some time off. It'll give me a chance to do those things, and at the same time to evaluate and look at situations that might arise about my future.

I'm not going to take responsibility for this, ... If I had been given a $40 million or $45 million payroll, I'd stand up like a man and say it's my fault. Well, I'm not going to do it. So if you want answers about what's going on here, you call the new ownership group and let them give them to you.

He's a lot responsible for the way we've played. To me, he's pitching with a lot more confidence. You can see it out there. But that's what winning does for you. You get aggressive, you make better pitches and you make better choices.

It's not easy, but it's the right thing, ... I wouldn't deviate from my decision. I'm perfectly content with it. Now I'll relax, play some golf and fish and do the things I want to do, and evaluate opportunities if they come and when they come.

You are paying those late-inning specialists a lot of money, and if you don't use them and lose the game, you have a lot of questions to answer.

When I came here, I didn't come here to retire, ... I did the best I could from a professional standpoint. I'm proud of some of the things we accomplished. It's not easy to lose, especially when you've won your whole life. It's not enjoyable to lose. That's what I tried to instill here and hopefully that's been done.

He's not a real big guy, so here in September he's worn down a little bit as far as his velocity is concerned. But he's pitched well all year and he's helped us win baseball games. [Thursday night against the Indians] he felt good, but they were just hitting him.

I was hoping that we could do basically what we did over in Seattle. It didn't happen, but it's on the right path. Somebody else can take over and take it the rest of the way. I've got no regrets about what happens now.

It's down to a playoff situation. The first round of the playoffs start tonight for every team -- first round of the playoffs.

When you win with the frequency that they did, you're playing with a lot of confidence. That adrenaline takes you a pretty good ways. All of a sudden you start losing, and maybe you start doubting yourself a little bit. Outside of that, it's a nice ball club with some nice talent over there.

I'm a little nervous, ... I haven't done this in a while.
