NASSCOM and the IT industry will work, in collaboration with the Police and government, towards tightening security measures to create a safer working environment for the industry.

Security has always been a priority for us. We have made continuous efforts to make India a secure outsourcing destination through various initiatives.

In the short term, most of the Indian technology companies may look at innovation as a strategy to achieve higher growth.

But in the long term, innovation will be a strategy to survive in a highly competitive world. If the companies don't innovate to open up new business opportunities, they will sink.

We intend to take up the issue with President Bush during his forthcoming visit to India (March 1). Since the US administration too understands our needs, we hope they address it. Indications are some moves are afoot in this direction.

Similarly, we see immense potential for the small and medium enterprise sector in both countries to collaborate and complement their strengths for designing and manufacturing products that can be marketed across the world at a competitive price.

Since Chinese firms are 10 times bigger in size than their Korean or Japanese counterparts, they should explore our market by investing here and making best use of our skilled workforce.

Though we have taken up the issue with the finance ministry a number of times, the issue is still hanging fire. The parent firms want a clarification on computing export profits generated by their Indian subsidiaries or vendors, as such a burden puts them at a disadvantage over other companies in the industry.

We are not against safeguards for L1 visas, but new restrictions should not be adverse. We agree L1 visas should not be misused. But the process should not take too long.

We are deeply concerned about the increase in levies on packaged software and on IT hardware.

A free trade agreement will complement both the economies. While their strength is the vibrant venture capital and marketing skills, the Indian IT industry is known globally for its vast and skilled manpower base.

A free trade agreement with the US in the services sector will be a win-win situation for both the countries.

There should be specific services industry related visas and there should be no cap or delay in processing them.

We are deeply concerned about the increase in levies on packaged software and on IT hardware, which will be a setback to efforts to promote IT utilization in the Indian economy and for vital applications like education and health.

This trend is particularly heartening as benefits of co-producing are immense.
